Wolf has a lot to say about persecution by the Chinese government and about how he thinks the U.S. government needs to treat China. He is sponsoring a bill (H.R. 2431) which is called, the “Freedom From Religious Persecution Act of 1997.”
The U.S. government would recognize the religious persecution of all faiths. An Office of Religious Persecution Monitoring is proposed which would report to Congress annually and would impose sanctions against countries which have recognized human rights violations.
Wolf believes the votes are available for the bill’s passage through Congress and he hopes it will reach the floor soon. The bill is supported by the U.S. Catholic Conference and Evangelicals for Social Action, which Wolf cited as a moderate evangelical group.
Carl Coon, Woodville resident and former Ambassador to Nepal, visited Tibet in 1993 and compared it to Hitler’s holocaust. Still he said he opposes H.R. 2431 on the grounds that it violates separation of church and state.
It is now estimated (although statistics are not verifiable) that one Tibetan in six has been murdered.
