er part of China, said Wolf. Monasteries, the center of Tibetan religious and political life, are being systematically destroyed. Of the 600 historic building in Lhasa, 356 have been destroyed, 15 of them in July.
“Seven Years in Tibet,” now in theatres, was filmed in South America, but Wolf said it looked exactly like the Tibetan plateau. He thought they did an excellent job recreating Tibet as it use to be. Tibet has a mystical, magical appeal, said Wolf, and the Tibetans ought to have their freedom and independence. One Tibetan woman told Wolf that when the West puts the pressure on, things loosen up.
The recent visit by Chinese president, Jiang Zemin, brought much attention to Tibet, said Wolf. There are 5.5 million Tibetans which are in danger from 1.2 billion Chinese. China has stepped out and squashed Tibet, he said.
Wolf was disappointed that Zemin was honored with a state dinner at the White House. It is something the Chinese wanted badly (even ordering the size of dinner plate they wanted used.) Wolf said the Chinese government is doing so many atrocious things: there are more gulags in China than ever because they make cheap items for export; an estimated 40 ■ million Chinese Christians must meet in underground churches and there are more Christians in prison there than in any other country; Catholic priests, a bishop and a protestant minister are currently in Chinese prisons for their faith; the Chinese are selling weapons to Iran; and Chinese prisoners are being harvested for organ transplants, “it’s like shopping for a Christmas tree,” Wolf said.
