and the time of day he took the photographs that inspired his image — usually mornings or late afternoons. The quality of light and the nature of the shadows of his paintings (prints) preserve the subtleties that seasons and hours give to a landscape. For this show, there are only three scapes with bare trees.
The casual and informal effects of the prints belie the care with which the scenes are selected and composed. With skill, he places trees close up or at some distance, and locates hills, mountains and open spaces or deep shadows, depending on the compositional effects he wants to create. To get a recognizable picture of a particular spot, he must work in reverse, like an etcher, since the print is necessarily a mirror image of the original painted scene the damp paper picks up from the acrylic sheet in the Charles Brand floor model etching press Hill uses.
Because the pictures are made to resemble a view of an exact place at an exact time, they could be mistaken for photographs by an unsuspect
