the house wren guilty of destroying the bluebird nest?
Lee noted on June 19 that the house wren was still carrying sticks into the abandoned bluebird nest near the garage. The bluebirds were nowhere to be seen. On June 29,1 saw two house wrens on the nest box near the garage. One was on the roof, the other disappeared into the nest cavity. No notes regarding wrens appeared in Lee’s records. The male was singing a shorter song and intervals of silence were longer.
Today is July 4. When i awakened soon after sunrise I heard the wren. Was the song less optimistic? Did I hear a lack of jubilation? Maybe so, maybe not. Perhaps I was projecting my own disappointment over the wren’s lack of success is luring another female into the yard.
I decided to look inside the nest box. My disappointment over the wren’s inability to secure another mate was misplaced. I had misread the situation and assumed too much. That is never wise in interpreting bird behavior.
Inside the box I found a perfectly formed nest; in it were three tiny eggs thickly spotted with reddish dots. There have been two wrens long enough for her to finish her nest and lay eggs. I rushed inside to inform Lee. The presence of another wren, and her nest with eggs, was duly noted in the day book. Never underestimate a house wren’s determination.
