Survivors include his wife of over 50 years Helen H. Hitt of Culpeper; three daughters Gail Yowell and husband James of True Blue, Belinda Kay Rankin and husband Fred of Slate Mills and Temple Murray and husband Jimmy of Etlan; one son Barry Hitt and wife Delores of Arrington; one sister Mrs. Howard Settle of Culpeper and one brother Edward Rice Hitt Jr. of Culpeper; 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 14 at Culpeper Baptist Church with Pastor Daniel Courtney officiating. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 330 of Culpeper.
Pallbearers were Tommy Ross, Mahlon McAlister, Joe Stephens, Bob Mocarski, Irvin Breeden, Andy Winn and Tommy Clark.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Culpeper County Volunteer Fire Department.
