Tetrachloroethene (PCE) the limit is 5.0 ug/1. However, Tnchloroethane breaks down to Trichloroethene and Tetrachlorethene, which are both 40 times more toxic than TCA.
The most common and efficient treatment for VOCs is an activated carbon filter that removes the chlorine from the water. Another type is dechlorination by steam-injection that breaks up the molecules, but not enough to break into vinyl chloride, a dangerous byproduct of VOC break-up. The chemicals are then more easily removed by ground-water extraction. The most expensive option is a pump-andtreat method that pumps the bad water out and replaces it with clean water. The expense is in transporting or treating the polluted water. The worst case of pollution would require reductive dehalogenation using granular zero valent iron. In this treatment reactive iron comes in contact with water and VOCs, the iron is oxidized, and the VOCs are reduced to safe compounds.
