In today’s fast-paced and often high stress world, teens and preteens across the country face some of the same needs and concerns. These needs can range from something as simple as lack of transportation to planned activities, to more complex social and health issues. Headwaters, the Rappahannock County Public Education Foundation, has recognized the fact that such concerns exist even within our own community. They recently were awarded a grant for $4,000 to start assessing teen needs in Rappahannock through a new Youth Development Program.
Earlier this summer, members of various community groups were brought together by Headwaters to discuss challenges facing our county youth. Members of this group informally interviewed a random cross-section of our students in an attempt to find a starting point for determining what local teens see as their biggest concerns. They discovered that, among other things, teens wished for more local employment opportunities, transportation for after-school activities, and a community center. Clearly, a need was there.
Headwaters decided to address this need by using the Youth Development grant to conduct a community survey of teens, pre-teens, parents, and other community members. Plans are for this survey to pinpoint major concerns for teens in the
