Opening night for the Rappahannock High School Lady Panthers did not turn out as hoped. Both the JV and varsity squads lost to the Page County Panthers on Sept. 2, but in different fashion.
The varsity girls wore ribbons on their jerseys in memory of Daniel Digges. Digges, who played on the RCHS boys varsity basketball team last season, died Aug. 30 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

The varsity Lady’Panthers found themselves in an early hole that they were unable to recover from. Page jumped out to a 16-4 lead after one quarter and lead 33-9 at the break. Page made five three-pointers in the half, including four in the first quarter.
The Lady Panthers had numerous open looks at the basket all night, but couldn’t get many shots to fall. Rappahannock made only one of 16 field goal attempts in the first half, and shot five for 42 for the game. They were a little better from the free throw line, making 11 of 23 attempts.
Panthers Coach Luther Stanley, while disappointed with the result, was pleased with his team’s effort. “The girls did very well. They played hard all night,” said Stanley after the game.
