School is open
Everyone please drive carefully, and
watch for children everywhere.
Rappahannock County Schools opened for another
year last week. And while we always need to
be careful on the roads, we now have even more reason to be careful. Let’s watch out for the school children when we’re behind the wheel.
With school in session, there will be more traffic on the roads during certain times of the day and more potential targets for careless motorists - including school buses, vehicles carrying small children and students who are walking near school grounds.
Why do you think there are reduced speed limits through the school zones during those times when school is getting in or out? It’s to keep people from driving around the schools too fast and to prevent accidents from happening.
Over the last couple of months, Rappahannock County has seen more than its share of traffic accidents. Some of them have involved teenagers. Not to say that teenagers are careless, but the point is that everyone needs to be careful. That includes parents, teenagers and everyone else who drives a car.
It can be very tempting to speed on some of the county’s highways, including U.S. 211. But be considerate, drive responsibly and be careful. The last thing we want to have to report on is someone getting hurt, especially a child getting hurt in an accident near one of the schools.
