Late in the* afternoon of Aug. 26, I was in my study reading about the effects of weather on birds. In particular, I wanted to know how birds handle the high winds of a hurricane. With little warning, a violent and noisy thunderstorm struck Flint Hill. I went to the porch to watch torrents of water ushering Route 522 down the hill, something I hadn’t seen in months. I didn’t stay long. Lightning was close and fierce; I retreated indoors as thunder cracked across the sky and rain beat down on the roof of this house. Though thunderstorms are fearsome and put me in proper perspective in regard to my importance. I welcomed this one. Back inside and again at my books, I mused on this storm and birds.
