which is causing a boom in demand for experienced teachers. We cannot stick our heads in the sand and hope that it will go away, because it cannot and will not!
We have to understand that unless our teachers are native bom, or moved here when home and land prices were more affordable, they cannot afford to live in this county. Many commute from Culpeper, Luray, Front Royal and other places. This costs them time and money. We have to show our appreciation to them and the school administrators, many of whom are in the same situation, by paying them a salary that is competitive with the school districts that surround us. And, I do not mean Page, Warren and Madison Counties. They are suffering the same blight that we are. We have to be competitive with our neighbors to the east. Anything else is foolish and will only reflect in much higher taxes than we would see otherwise.
I call upon you gentlemen, as the supervisors of this county, to show your fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers of this county and immediately return the school budget to the School Board with an increase of two percent to improve teacher administrative salaries. This is being fiscally responsible. It is not responsible to accept this budget as it is, for it will cost the taxpayers of this county an enormous amount more than anyone expects.
