CHARLOTTESVILLE - A Sperryville couple arrested in a major poaching sting have pleaded guilty to illegally selling black bear gall bladders, whole bear carcasses and wild ginseng.
Danny Ray Baldwin and Bonnie Sue Baldwin entered the pleas Thursday in U.S. District Court in Charlottesville as part of an agreement with prosecutors.
While the Baldwins each agreed to admit guilt to nine charges, federal authorities offered them no guarantee of leniency: The Baldwins each face up to 41 years in prison and a fine of $2,100,000 when sentenced.
The Baldwins are “pleading guilty to the charges — because it is in [their] best interest to do so and not because of any threats or promises,” the agreement states.
However, the plea bargain allows for prosecutors to recommend a lighter sentence if the Baldwins offer “substantial assistance” in the prosecution of someone else.
“Substantial assistance” means the Baldwins would provide information allowing the government to make a case it otherwise could not.
In addition to the pleas, Bonnie Sue Baldwin was found guilty of possessing firearms after being convicted of a felony. The maximum penalty for the charge is 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
