Mrs. Jenkins points out that many of the surrounding areas have more extensive exposure to sports at a younger age, and that our kids have to compete against that when they play in our district: “We have a lot of participation for such a small place... yet the first few years that I coached Rappahannock we had to teach the basics, the rules of the game, how to throw the ball and so forth. That’s too late when other schools are starting at eight or nine years old. • . _

We’ve improved Tf lot since then, but there is more that we could do.” For that reason, Mrs. Jenkins recruits more kids on her teams than she may actually field, so the kids can learn and improve by being around the game, even if they don’t always compete. “I want to have kids start out younger, because I know that when I started out, what I learned came from playing with the other, older kids”..

Mrs. Jenkins hopes to coach for many years to come. Not that many of us are in the rare and lucky circumstance of doing what we love, and in that sense, Mrs. Jenkins has been blessed: “I always said if I ever got the chance to coach, that’s what I wanted to do... That’s why I coach, because I love the game”.
