Heddleston delivered a very organized, articulate speech during the eagle ceremony at the Washington Fire Hall. Following are some excerpts from his speech.
“I should consider this weekend the most memorable of my life. I have, in a sense, graduated twice: Yesterday from high school, and today from Scouting. I realize that some of the things I learned from each institution will stick with me throughout my lifetime. And the memories I want to mention today are the good ones.”
“Boy Scouts serves a unique purpose in our culture. Scouting takes a boy, something that is not made up of ‘sugar and spice and everything nice’, and it attempts to make a man out of him. Not a slouch of a man, but a decent, upright, God fearing man, one who may, simply by his integrity, make a lasting impression on someone else or something else someday. Scouting takes a boy and molds him into many things boys do not automatically become, trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, reverent, of good service to himself, his family, his community and his country.”
