THE SURVIVORS’
AFFAIR
“A man’s dying is more the survivors’ affair than his own.” With those words, writer Thomas Mann summed up an essential facet of the grieving process. That is, the deceased’s work is done, and now it is the work of the survivors to come to terms with his or her death. It is important for friends and family of the departed to realize that their tears have no bearing on those who are no longer able to see them. We who remain behind shed tears, instead, out of our own sorrow and loss. As our tears help us to face our loss, they may be replaced with the clear vision of acceptance.
