The Oscars will be awarded Sunday, March 25, for best films and performances in 2000. Nominations are selected by the Motion Picture Academy.
RAAC has presented three of the films up for several awards— "Gladiator,” 12 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor (Russell Crowe); “Erin Brockovich,” five nominations including Best Picture and Best Actress (Julia Roberts); and “Almost Famous,” with four nominations.
The following films, all nominees for Academy Awards, are scheduled to be shown at The Theatre in Washington:
• April 6: “Billy Elliot” (Unrated, 125 minutes) Delightful tale of a boy, played by newcomer Jamie Bell, who needs to dance. Set in an English mining town, Julie Walters plays his ballet teacher who sees his talent and fights with his dad and brother and striking miners to let him. Three academy award nominations, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay.
• April 20: “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” (PG-13, 106 minutes) In this satiric comedy, three escaped convicts (George Clooney, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson) try to evade the law in 1930s Mississippi while searching for hidden loot and a way home to their families.
