I refer to last week’s letter of Edith Pond,

in which she advances the fact that someone named “George W. Bush is now President of the United States.” And she made the point four times in a rather short letter.

Such open-minded and clear-headed observation is indeed commendable. So gifted a person surely knows the difference between right and wrong.

Thus, in the case of the faith-based national missile defense, on which $90 billion has already been spent in the guise of Star Wars, and on which the purported President of the United States proposes to spend $240 million more, Edith Pond must be aware that the system so far has shown no signs of working, and that it is not really necessary in any case.

And as an open-minded, clear-headed problem solver, she is undoubtedly aware of the proposition that the Government is, as Lincoln, the last great Republican President, said, “of the people, by the people, for the people.” It follows that the Government may have a role in seeing
