By Bette Mahoney * Rappahannock News Writer ; The first meeting of the Rappahannock County Chapter of the American , Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Team Captains was held on Tuesday, March 6 at 7:30 at the ' Washington Fire Hall. About 25 people were in attendance. , The Relay for Life is the annual fund raising event of , the Rappahannock County Chapter of the American , Cancer Society. The Relay will , take place at the t Rappahannock County »Elementary School on May 1819.
, Teams of 10 to 15 people < will set up campsites and take , turns moving around a track during this overnight event, which is both a celebration of , life and a community party. The event is more than a t fundraiser.
Cancer education takes
f)lace. Survivors walk the first ap, symbolizing the progress , we have made. Evening luminary ceremonies memorialize , those special people who have lost their battle with cancer and to honor cancer survivors. , Actual fund raising takes place before the event as Relay S teams’ members solicit sponsors for themselves and their teams and through other activities such as bake sales and yard sales.
Ben Atkins, the Chair of this year’s event, introduced Michelle Kaye, captain of the Faith Mountaineers team, to describe her participation in the event. Michelle has participated in the event for six years and as a captain for the last three years - ever since the Relay has taken place in Rappahannock County. • She described the teamwork required to raise funds J and suggested bake sales and raffles as possible events. She went on to describe the walk of the survivors and the teams, as well as the “big party” atmosphere and “great food” at this community event.
She also talked about the emotions and spirituality of the ' event - the joy for the survivors and the progress; the sadness for the loss of friends and relatives; and, the hope for the future of less cancer and more survivors.
Ben Atkins described * this year’s event to be held May 18-19. Because the rain complicated last year’s event, this year there will be two agendas - one for good weather, and one for rain. Set up will begin at 'lunchtime at the ’ Rappahannock County Elementary School.
The formal event will begin at 7 p.m. with a few speakers 1 and the survivor ceremony. Last year there were about 40
