No one feels more sorrow
than I for the families of the Japanese who lost their lives when our submarine surfaced and accidentally sunk a Japanese fishing boat. Nine people lost their lives.
People have been killed in accidents that never were expected to happen. And I’m sorry to say that there will be accidents in the future, regardless of what we think or how careful we are. However, this reasoning does not excuse what happened.
I am very sorry that this acddent happened and for the families who no longer have their loved ones with them.
I am sure that we Americans will pay dearly for this in more ways than one.
The families want the fishing boat raised from over a 2,000 foot depth, monetary pay from the U.S., Captain to apologize and also punished, plus much more they will be asking from us I am sure. I do hope that we have learned from this tragic experience.
Looking back, I remember Dec. 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and hundreds lost their lives in and on the USS Arizona as well as on other ships anchored there. Hundreds of men inside the Arizona died there. Tapping on the hull of the ship was heard for a couple days and after that all was silent. Some were rescued, but others perished unable to be rescued in time.
