cations skills, starting and maintaining a relationship, and child and adolescent development, as well as strategies for handling problems which might develop. It emphasized the value of listening and maintaining confidentiality in the development of trust.
This training was enhanced by a series of programs known as The Starfish Roundtable, which brought the mentors together with experienced mentors and other professionals to encourage sharing of information and group support.
Another aspect of the Starfish program is the program at Rappahannock High School. This program was initiated in the fall of 1998 with Seniors mentoring Eighth graders. In 1999 and 2000 the program involved 11th graders mentoring ninth graders, a change suggested by our first group of high school mentors.
These mentors are trained at the school separately from our adult mentors, and the program is completely self-contained. Information about becoming a mentor and being a friend to a young person can be obtained by calling Ellen NeillDore at 675-1461.
