Katie stated that having two older brothers made her try harder to beat them in the show ring. The Updikes breed their own cattle through artificial insemination as well as breeding with some home raised bulls. They currently own a herd of around 60 cattle. Katie also shows lambs, and they raised their own sheep until approximately three years ago when they sold their flock to Katie’s uncle. Katie and her brothers have also exhibited hogs.
Katie stated that 4-H has changed some over the years in the level of intensity and competition. There are fewer participants now, probably due to time commitment and many other activities that youth are able to participate in now. Katie states that she has enjoyed learning from afid sharing ideas with other breeders and exhibitors.
Her most memorable experience was during Junior Showmanship one year when Katie had to switch steers with another exhibitor. Katie’s steer broke away twice and each time returned to Katie.
Katie’s brother, Scott was a member of the State judging team at Virginia Tech. He just completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science and is pursuing a Master’s Degree at
