When the long hot evenings of summer came, long before television and air conditioning, we would all gather on the front porch. There we would hear tales of long ago, solve all the world problems, and our own as well. We talked about our own lives and dreams.

This did not happen just one night, it was a daily occasion every night when supper was over. (This was our evening meal).

Our front porch was used as another room, weather permitting. It was the window to our world, enjoyed and shared by each of us.

We would gather the vegetables from our garden, and the front porch was where we would string the beans, and hull peas. We seeded cherries, capped strawberries. All this was done as a family because we got through much faster. “Heap of hands make light work”, was an old saying. The mess was much easier to clean up on the porch, and it was cooler than in the house.

The rainy days were always my favorite. I loved to hear the rain on the tin roof. Sometimes it was so loud you could hardly hear each other talk. On these rainy days we got our energy out by playing
