sons change. The mountain around us told us much we needed to know about the weather. We would watch the rain clouds wash their way to our home during a thunderstorm. You could see the rain long before it reached our house. Sometimes it would go down the opposite side of the ridge. When the lightening became more severe, our parents would have us all go inside until the storm was over.
In early spring the frogs would start crooking from the meadow. We watched as the mountain became green, starting at the bottom and slowly go upward. The redbud and dogwood would put on .their beautiful flower show. The birds that had been gone for the winter, returned with their songs.
As the weather became warmer, the lightening bugs, (fire flies) returned.
We would catch them just before dark and put them in a mason jar with holes in the lid for ventilation. We would watch them light, and before bedtime we would let them fly away.
Other night sounds we always listened to were tree frogs and jar flies (non-periodical cicada). We were told you
