The community of Scrabble lost a driving force on the morning of July 9 as Robert Grayson Dennis unexpectedly passed away.

Robert, a school bus driver and proprietor of the Dennis Store on the corner of Routes 626 and 680 for more than four decades, had walked across the road to check his good friend Jim “Nick” Hackley’s house when he suffered an apparent heart attack. His wife was called back from New Jersey, where she had been tending to a sister with major health problems.

* Several hundred people attended the funeral services held at Shiloh Baptist Church in Woodville on Saturday, July 14. The Beulah Men’s Chorus, where his son-in-law Ronnie White is a member, flawlessly sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.” The highlight of the service came when Robert’s eight grandchildren surrounded his flagdraped casket, delivered their own tributes to their grandfather, and then sang “Oh Happy Day.”
