Ever consider hosting an exchange student? The school year is well over, a crop of exchange students has finished up a successful year and gone home, and now Jeanne McNear, our area Youth For Understanding coordinator is looking for families or individuals interested in hosting students for this upcoming school year.
We are all familiar with student exchange programs; organizations that place students from various countries with families for a school year. But these programs serve a nobler purpose than simply providing travel experience for a select group of kids.
They are designed to encourage human contact and understanding across diverse cultures, nations and states. Youth For Understanding (YFU) was founded fifty years ago, in Ann Arbor Michigan, shortly after the second world war, by one Dr. Rachel Andresen.
YFU tells us that in 1951, “in an effort to heal the wounds of World War II, Dr. Andresen arranged for 75 young Germans to live and attend school in Michigan for a year.” Bringing young German students to the U.S. exposed those students to American family life at it’s best, and surely helped to dispel whatever stereotypes they had grown up with.
