Robert, a pillar of this small and closely knit community in the heart of .Rappahannock, was an easygoing, perceptive man whose wide smile and big-handed wave were a symbol of welcome for everyone who had occasion to pass through. One couple even developed a habit of riding their bicycles from Flint Hill to Scrabble just to pass a couple hours sipping Pepsi and jawing with Robert on the store porch.
Born on May 24, 1930, Robert was a lifelong resident of Scrabble except for his stint in the armed forces. He served for two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and received an honorable discharge in order to return to this region and care for his ailing father, Cliff Dennis, who built and opened the Dennis Store in 1925.
Following his demise, the store closed for a short period jof time but Robert reopened it in 1960, and it has served as an unquestionable social centerpiece since that time.
