When those students got home and pursued their:schooling and later their careers, hopefully they remained changed by their experiences overseas, and forever have a broader understanding of the world and of people.
By the same token, those initial host families, their children and all their fellow classmates got to meet and get to know these young German students, seeing them just as kids like any other, and not simply as representatives of the former enemy. Every year since then, YFU has repeated this noble experiment, until now they work with students in every state and fifty nations.
In the manner of most truly good ideas, the aims of exchange programs like YFU are as meaningful and pressing today as they have ever been.
But if you host an exchange student, you won’t have to settle for some broad philosophical satisfaction with the goals of student exchanges. The benefits are immediate and personal. You gain a friend, and you get to learn about a distant place and another way of life from the best possible source; a friend of yours who is from there.
