on the porch. There was “Mother, May I”, jumping rope, Jack rocks, and of course the familiar swing. We would swing for hours, and would make it go so high. We could touch the ceiling with our feet.
Whenever we had visitors they were always entertained on the porch. We were taught “to be seen and not heard”. The porch was decorated with pretty potted plants. There were no nurseries available, so when they saw a plant different to what they had, they would ask for a “slip”. This meant a piece of the plant that they would take home and start their own plant. They would plant it in soil, and put a glass mason jar over it, keeping it damp until it rooted.
