founders to divine the intent of the majority of the founders. To focus on the views of any one founder is to elevate the view of one man over the will of the people.
This is plainly wrong in a nation of laws (passed by a majority) and not of men (whether Jefferson, Mason, or Madison).
I have written a more extensive explanation of my own personal opposition to the phrase “separation of church and state” which I have circulated on Rappnet. As I reflected in much greater detail there, the reference to “church” in that phrase improperly discriminates against the Christian religion and is offensive to Christians as a people entitled to equal protection under the law.
I personally would have no objection to rephrasing that interpreting phrase to read “separation of religious institutions and state,” so as not to discriminate against one particular religion.
