Some years ago. former First Ladv Jackie Kennedy phoned me at home one Sunday morning from the Mellons’ home. She was hot over a story we had just published.
It seems we had quoted Bunny Mellon’s gardener, Charlie Pecora, as taking credit for designing the new White House Rose Garden outside the West Wing, then pretty big news about the home of American Chief Executives with President Kennedy’s announced plan to use it for events of state.
Jackie w anted me to know in no uncertain terms that it was Bunny Mellon who had helped her design the Rose Garden on Pennsylvania Avenue and that “Mr. Pecora had nothing to do with it, except for putting in some flowers.”
