5. German Boy: A Child in War, by Wolfgang Samuel (paperback, $15.95). This is World War II in Germany seen through a child's eyes, a compelling memoir of life under the Nazis and under the Russians and in refugee camps in the post-war years. The author, who discussed and signed his book at the bookshop in October, eventually emigrated to the U.S. and became a career officer in the U.S. Air Force.
