America may be fascinated by fantasy and fiction, but book buyers in Rappahannock County showed a strong inclination to read history this year, judging by the best sellers of 2001 at the Old Sperry ville Bookshop.
It wasn’t Harry Potter or the Lord of the Rings that attracted most book buyers locally, but rather such subjects as the Civil War, local history, President John Adams and a little boy who endured World War II in Germany. As in past years, books with a strong local connection were best sellers, with four of the top ten books featuring a strong connection to Rappahannock County.
The bookstore in the old church on historic Main Street in Sperryville is the only bookstore in the county, so its annual best sellers tell a lot about the reading interests of local people and the many visitors who come to the county each year. While the store sells a wide variety of current fiction, children’s books, religious books and others, the best sellers were dominated by history and local interests, with an unusual cookbook and a meditative escapist memoir thrown in for flavor.
