The Screech Owl, in one form or another, is found throughout the United States. Canada and Mexico. They occur in the Virginia Piedmont almost anywhere they can find hollow trees for nesting and rodents for food.
Eastern Screech Owls are commonly found in our area where they are permanent residents.
The Screech Owl, our second smallest owl, occurs in three-color phases, gray, reddish and a rare brown. In the red phase, bird’s upper parts are reddish, indistinctly streaked with black. The under parts are barred with red and black. In the gray phase, the upper parts are a rather drab gray lightly barred with dark drab gray and the under parts are barred with black. The brown phase is like the gray phase except the upper parts are a warm brown.
The eyes are large and yellow.
