The sexes are alike except females will be larger than the males. Length is about nine inches and the wingspan is about 18 inches.
The nesting site is usually a tree or tall stump. Woodpecker holes are often used. The birds will also use birdhouses if the entrance is large enough and the house is in a suitable location. They will sometimes nest in houses, if the house is near the woods.
The Screech Owls eat almost any form of life it can find and catch and is wholly beneficial as a great part of its diet is mice and rats. Other foods include insect-life, beetles, moths, worms, crawfish, lizards, spiders and fish when the opportunity arises.
The owls also take small birds up to the size of a dove. However, birds seem to be a lesser part of the owl’s diet. It should be remembered that owls and all birds of prey perform an important function in nature; weeding out the sickly, diseased and infirm animals and birds. They also prey on whatever is easiest to catch and common such as the hated House Sparrows and Starlings.
The voice of the owl is not a screech as its name implies.
