A lot of what the 2000 census tells us we already know. As compared to the rest of Virginia, Rappahannock is small (only 207 square miles), sparsely populated (only 26.2 persons per square mile — Virginia is much more crowded at 178.8) and the number of the metropolitan areas equals zero.
So, who are we?
We are 6,983 strong and growing slowly. Our population has grown only 5.5 percent since 1990. That’s less than the 14.4 percent growth rate for the rest of the state. About as many are under five years old as are over 75 and 1,200 are retired or approaching retirement.
Almost all were horn in the United States and 65 percent were born in Virginia. Of the foreign bom residents, 135 are not yet citizens. We are considerably more white than the rest of Virginia, we have more women-owned businesses than the state or nation as a whole, and there are more owning two or more vehicles than those who have only one or none.
Families
We are very married in Rappahannock with only about 27 percent either divorced or never married. The vast majority live here as part of a family (72 percent). There are 1,557 children under 18 and' 356 are under five — the youngest residents. Of the 201 grandparents living in the same household with their grandchildren, 25 are the primary care givers.
Women and men
There are just about as many men as women in the county and thdt ratio follows from birth to death. Full-time, year-round workers in Rappahannock if they’re male show a median income of $32,725. Women in the same category make
