Attractive native groundcover, shrubs and trees are used in the rain garden, which thrive on excess nutrients that are harmful to surface waters, and provide habitat for local wildlife. A thick layer of mulch, acts as a filter, and holds moisture for the garden during diy spells. The soil below is mixed with sand and compost, continuing the filtering process. The concept is simple enough for anyone with some green space to put into practice.
A symposium titled “Conservation Through Rain Gardens” will be held on Aug. 20 and 21 in Charlottesville. The first day will cover the benefits of rain gardens and how to construct them. On the second day, participants will install a rain garden and go on a case study tour.
