The Washington Town Council may have revealed its new face when it approved a Special Use permit for 714 square feet of retail space on the first floor of the former Mrs. Coxe’s Tavern. Mayor Stew Willis made clear his opposition to the application hut only Alice Butler shared his view, and .newly seated (as of July It Council members Claudia Mitchell and Jeff Benson joined Vice Mayor Steve Critzer in speaking in favor of the Special Use application.
The Inn at Little Washington lost its bid at the June meeting of the Washington Town Council for 1950 square feet of retail space in the same building. At that time. Mayor Willis, Alice Butler, and Alice King voted negatively on the standard that shows the application “not in conflict with the predominant character of the neighborhood . . .” and the affirmative votes by Vice Mayor Critzer and Jerry Goebel were insufficient to support the application.
The votes on the same standard for the new application were weighted on the affirmative side, with Mr. Critzer, Mr. Goebel and new councilpersons Mitchell and Benson voting for and the Mayor and Mrs. Butler voting against.
The votes on the remaining standards were all unanimous, and Mayor Willis then moved to approve the Special Use permit for the Inn and the Council voted unanimously to okay the application. Council
