The pharmacist or physician can offer further advice on the various products.
Prevention
Other methods of beating the chiggers is to mow and keep mowed areas you intend to use. Keeping the lawns on the short side will permit sunlight and air to circulate, cutting down on the shade and moisture the chiggers prefer.
If the chigger problem is intolerable, treating chigger hot spots with insecticides is a possibility. Because chiggers tend to congregate in “mite islands” it is far faster, more effective, and less expensive to treat those areas than the entire property. Ch'lorpyrifos (Dursban), carbaryl (Sevin), of diazinon when used according to the directions and with care will give control.
Some “don’ts”
Don’t wear dog or cat flea collars around your ankles or cattle ear tags on your shoes — chemical skin burns and toxic effects result; don’t scratch; don’t assume your much loved dog hasn’t picked up lots of chiggers and brought them into the house; don’t despair — winter will come.
