The Rappahannock County Junior Varsity Girls’ Volleyball team took to the road on Feb. 20 in four wheel drives, mini-vans and cars to Brentsville High School for the Bull Rum District Semi-Finals and Finals.
This team, coached by Susan Payne, first grade teacher at Rappahannock County Elementary School and Courtney Atkins, former RCHS volleyball star, with hard work, dedication and little or no gym time at the high school found itself in second place in the district.
They went to Brentsville on a mission that they had all season long, to be the best.
The girls started their warm-up with a prayer led by Mattie Nawrocki. The opponent they were to face was the undefeated Strasburg Rams.
Mattie Nawrocki served the Panthers first point with Rachel Gall serving the next two. But the Rams took an early lead with a 6-3 score. Coach Payne called for a time out to settle the Lady Panthers down. It did not help that they had not been able to practice in over a week.
Danielle North was up to serve and the girls rallied to tie the game at 6-6. The Panthers fought hard with several good volleys, but they couldn’t pull out the first match victory.
