“It’s a real problem” to reschedule the point-to-point races, O’Keefe said. “Twenty years ago, there were just eight Virginia point-to-points, so if one was pushed back, it was easy to make up the date. Now we have 12 on our own schedule, plus many Maryland hunts now have their own races, as well as the Delaware Valley series, so it’s a real strain on the horse population to have to try and find a place for these races. There’s just no room on the schedule.”
At press time, the official Virginia point-to-point season is due to start on March 15 at the Warrenton Hunt Point-to-Point at Airlie.
The Casanova Hunt is considering running their races that Sunday, March 16, but both meets would have to alter their programs substantially as there is just one set of National Fences available to rent from Great Meadow for hurdle races.
