Three Rappahannock County residents have thrown their hats in the ring as candidates for county sheriff.
They are incumbent Larry Sherertz, former Secret Service officer Steve Butler of Boston and former deputy sherifflbdd Brown of Chester Gap.
The last day for candidates to qualify for the November election of Rappahannock County officials is June 10.
By the looks of things at the Registrar's Office, there may be a last minute rush by candidates to submit the necessary petitions with the required 125 signatures of registered voters by 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
"Those people waiting till the last minute are taking a gamble," said Registrar Nancy Newlin.
She explained that a signature on a petition would not be valid if the person lists only a post office box for an address and not the actual physical 911 location or if the date is missing. If that is the case, a prospective candidate would not have the time left to collect the requisite valid signatures.
Those who have filed the necessary petitions and are qualified to run include Beverly Atkins, Commissioner of Revenue; Peter Luke, County Attorney; and Frances Foster, Treasurer.
The county sheriff race has the most number of candidates vying for that position. While Sherertz and Butler have qualified and have the valid number of signatures, Brown said he has his signatures and will take his petition to the Registrar’s Office this week.
