A new novel

Local author Carolyn Reeder specializes in writing historical fiction for young readers.
Her subjects and settings range from the upheaval forced upon Virginia mountain families by the development of Shenandoah National Park to the turmoil and dangers faced by adolescents during the Civil War.
In all her books, she remains the teacher that she was before becoming the writer that she is.
Young readers and their adult companions will have a chance to hear the author discuss her books on Thursday, June 5 at 7 p.m. at the Old Sperryville Bookshop on Main Street in Sperryville.
She will also sign her newest novel, “Before the Creeks Ran Red,” which tells three interlocking stories involving three young teenagers caught up in the events leading to the Civil War.
Reeder’s books are geared to young persons aged eight to 12 years old, though they can be read and enjoyed by readers older and younger.
Her presentation will be a chance for students who are interested in writing to hear how an author develops ideas and shapes them into a book and builds stories of adventure and daring involving young Americans in a true historical setting, such as the Great Depression or World War II.
The author lives in Maryland but spends a good deal of time at her second home in Rappahannock County.
