Not knowing that I am

a subscriber to and faithful reader of the Rappahannock News, several of my thoughtful Rappahannock County relatives mailed me the obituary of the late Pauline Bruce. The reason for their kindness is easy to explain: they knew well how much I respected and admired that truly great educator and human being.

As you correctly state in your front-page story, Mrs. Bruce was “well known throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia due to the achievements and successes of her Latin students in statewide academic competitions.”

I was one of the many students at Fauquier High School whom Mrs. Bruce taught. Because of Mrs. Bruce’s remarkable ability to teach and to motivate her students to excel, I took first place in the state Latin essay contest one year and second in the
