Reeder and her husband Jack also are the co-authors of three books of non-fiction that tell the history of the development of Shenandoah National Park and of the culture of the mountain people who were displaced from their land by the federal government during the 1930s Depression.
The author says she never planned to be a writer.
From the time she was 12 years old, when she taught a neighborhood child to read, she knew she would be a teacher.
During her years as a teacher, she and her husband began to research and write books on the park, and later she turned to writing fiction for young readers.
“At first, I wrote only during school vacations, but before long I began to write during the school year too,” the author said. “Writing became more and more important to me until finally I decided to give up teaching and be a full-time author.”
The program at the book shop is free and open to the public. Parents and grandparents are particularly encouraged to bring their family’s young readers.
Free sodas, coffee and cookies will be served, and no homework assignments will be given.
