County Administrator John McCarthy noted that the county has had an abandoned vehicle disposal program for the past 12 years. The county, he said, hires a contractor to remove "as many (abandoned vehicles) as the owner wants," at no cost to the owner.
McCarthy addressed the issue of abandoned vehicles that are legal by virtue o£ being grandfathered (abandoned before the ordinance was enacted in 1986). He said that in some cases a determination can be made: "If a tree is growing up through the chassis of a Nash Rambler that is probably grandfathered, but if it's growing through the fender well of a Yugo, it isn't."
