The next match was against Randolph-Henry from Charlotte Courthouse. In Round 1, Kreyling correctly answered three questions including the aufbau principle, Jack Frost, and debit card. Nathan Welch correctly identified the radioisotope found in living matter, Carbon-14, which made the score 40-60 with the Panthers trailing.
In Round 2, the best round of the day, Kreyling gave five correct answers, while senior Julia Baumgardner correctly identified the opera Madame Butterfly. Rappahannock now led by 30 points, 100 to 70. In Round 3, Baumgardner and Kreyling each contributed 10 points, and most importantly, Randolph Henry did not fare well, missing the chance to steal on “Run DMC.” The Panthers maintained the lead and prevailed by a final score of 120 to 100, keeping their hopes alive.
In the next match, the Panthers came out strong in Round 1, with Tyler Williams getting two answers, one in math and one in history, and Kreyling with 30 points, mostly on U.S. history, which would have made Mr. West proud. The Panthers led 50 to 20 at the end of the round.
In directed questions, Rappahannock scored 40 and Nelson 50, cutting the lead to 20. Kreyling scored twice on “matrix” and “humanism,” while Glen Swain correctly identified the real name of the Red Baron,
In the final round, the Panthers had difficulty, missing a Winston Churchill quote. Nelson then proceeded to answer four out of five questions correctly in a row, meaning that the Panthers would need every other point in order to tie. Although Baumgardner correctly named Johannesburg as the largest city in South Africa, and Tyler Williams answered a math question correctly, it was too late. The final score was Nelson 140, Panthers 110.
As it turned out, George Mason took second place in the region, with the host school, Riverheads as overall winner.
