This is the year of the locust. Well, actually, it is the year of the periodical cicada.
Locust is the common name for the insect that emerges from the ground here every several years. But technically “locusts” are migratory grasshoppers seen in other parts of the country, says Loudoun County Extension agent Debbie Dillion.
Virginia sees two types of cicada^) the 13-year and the 17year varieties. The ones expected this year are of the 17-year cycle. The small black insect with bright red eyes and reddish-orange wings should first appear in early to-mid May.
