Why? Because the cost of serving patients — regardless of who they are — must be covered somehow. And if the state fails to cover the cost of patients it is responsible for, then those costs get shifted to patients with private insurance, the businesses who pay for a large percentage of that private insurance, and the individuals who pay for medical care out of their own pockets.
How big is this problem?
At Fauquier Hospital, approximately 5 percent of our patients receive services through Medicaid. In the 2003 fiscal year, Fauquier Hospital estimates a $1.47 million shortfall between what it costs to care for Medicaid patients and what we are paid for their services.
At Warrenton Overlook Health & Rehabilitation Center, more than half of our patients are covered by Medicaid.
