Rappahannock students that included a garden they could design and tend (and eat), a composting program to recycle the cafeteria scraps into fertilizer for the soil, and a truly welcoming spot for the community to visit and participate in, a fully sustainable garden.”
Overseeing the program is RCHS Principal Roger Mello, whose parents, Jim and Sally Mello, own and operate Oak Shade Farm in Rixeyville and have decades of experience in sustainable agriculture as well as in education.
Other local growers volunteering their time to establish the program are Susan Hoffman and Mike Biniek of Belle Meade and Trista Scheuerlein of Peace Vine Farm.
Principal Mello commented, “As a resident of Rappahannock, one should have an understanding of the importance of horticulture. Residents of any community should develop a spirit of volunteerism. I hope that our Horticulture class and the Farm-to-Table program give our students both of these things,”
