Two men from Rappahannock County were deployed last Thursday to Fort Bragg, N.C. with the Army National Guard on what may be a stepping stone to duty in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Joshua Rendle Waddell, 24, a combat medic, who grew up in Rappahannock and Jason Watson, 25, of Washington, an infantry soldier, left as part of a contingent of some 570 Virginians of the 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry, who were put on active duty for 18 months to two years.
Mqj. Gen. Claude Williams, the state Guard’s commander, would not speculate on where the Virginia soldiers may eventually be sent, but some 35,000 Guard members are to be part of the 105,000 U.S. military contingent in Iraq.
Waddell, a 1998 graduate of Rappahannock High School, whose mother Patti teaches biology there, is a highly trained cardiac emergency medical technician and paramedic. He has been volunteering as a rescue squad member since high school and works on emergency ambulances in
